Overall— “Oriental Switzerland

Qingdao is surrounded by the sea on 3 sides, located on the Shandong Peninsula, and facing the Yellow Sea that is a part of Pacific Ocean. Qingdao is a historic, seaside city that has a mild climate, beautiful coastlines, and diverse architecture.

 With an area of 10,654 square kilometers, it has about 8 millions of population. Qingdao is not only the economic center of Shandong Province, but also the one of 14 coastal open-economic cities of China.

The red roofs, green trees, blue sea, and azure sky form a bright and colorful picture of Qingdao, so that Qingdao gains another name for herself—Oriental Switzerland.  Charming Qingdao attracts millions of tourists each year.

 

There are many scenic spots that attract tourists from all over the world. Here just shows a few of them.

 

1. Cathedral

 The twin-spire St Michael's Cathedral, is one piece of the famous architecture in Qingdao, designed by German architect, completed in 1934.

 

2. Qingdao International Sailing Centre

Qingdao was the host city for the Olympic Sailing race which took place along the shoreline by the city.  Qingdao International Sailing Centre covers a total area of 450,000 square meters.  Qingdao has become a major stop for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2007~2008, and Volvo Ocean Race 2008~2009 which will test the “Best of the Best” in open ocean around the world race.

 

 

3. Zhan Qiao Pier

pier is at the tip of Qingdao Bay off Zhongshan road. It is 440 meter (1,443.6ft) long. It was the first wharf in Qingdao, and was built in 1891 (117 years old). At the end of Zhan Qiao Pier, there is an octagonal pavilion called Hui Lan Ge that is a kind of traditional Chinese style building.    Zhanqiao pier is viewed as the official symbol of Qingdao.

 

 

4. Little Qingdao Island

In the vicinity of Zhan Qiao Pier is the Small Qingdao Island (Xiao Qingdao), it is part of the Navy Base. There is a Navy Museum and a lighthouse.

 

 

5.  May Fourth Square—New City Area

It is a large public square in Qingdao's central business district. It covers an area of 100,000 sq meters (119,599 sq yards).  (Named after the nationwide protest movement that started in Qingdao) The square is best recognized by the large "May Wind" (Wuyue Feng) sculpture near the seaside. The square is a popular tourist destination, and is bordered by the city government building to the north, the sea to the south, and residential and commercial buildings on either side. It is also a symbol of the New City Area.

 

 

6.  Long Seashore Sightseeing Sidewalk

 This sidewalk is about 3~4 meter wide and 39 miles long. It connects many scenic spots and beaches along the seashore. So you can do exercise—walking, while you go sightseeing.

 

 

7.  Lao Shan Mountain

Mt. Laoshan is situated at the seashore of Yellow sea, in the east of Qingdao city, with a total area of 446 km2. It is one of the national main scenic spots announced by State Council. Jufeng (the highest peak), 1132.7m above sea level is the highest among the mountains along the national coastal line of over 10,000 miles. Mt. Laoshan also bears the name as “No 1 coastal mountain”, “land for supernatural being” or “fascinating and blessing place” which makes it a famous scenic spot for sightseeing, spending summer holidays, resting and recuperating.
